Company drill
Standpipe and FDC company drill
A company-level standpipe/FDC drill covering supply pressure, hose to the FDC, elevation, attack line stretch, and department policy pressure.
Drill plan
ObjectiveTeach firefighters not to treat every FDC as a simple flat 10 PSI appliance loss.
Setup
- Identify department default FDC/standpipe pressure
- Discuss hose layout from engine to FDC
- Add elevation where applicable
- Discuss attack line from outlet to nozzle
Student taskHave students explain what pressure the engine should start with and what factors may force an adjustment.
Expected answer pathFollow department SOP. Consider hose to FDC, required system pressure, elevation, attack line layout above the outlet, and real feedback from crews operating inside.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to state nozzle pressure or required appliance/device pressure.
- Using GPM where PSI is needed, or PSI where GPM is needed.
- Adding elevation or appliance loss twice.
- Ignoring department SOPs, apparatus pump chart, or manufacturer data.
Instructor note: After the first answer, change one variable and repeat the calculation.
